Welch Materials Sample Vial Selection Guide

Welch Materials' sample vials are crafted from Type I hydrolytic borosilicate glass, compliant with the United States and European Pharmacopeias. These products are designed to reduce consumables in your experiments, minimize errors caused by ghost peaks, needle damage, and septa movement, and significantly decrease the likelihood of failed analyses. They also allow for effective sample reuse.

Product Features

  1. LCGC certified for quality assurance.
  2. Made from high-quality Type I 51-expansion glass and Type II 33-expansion glass.
  3. Manufactured with computerized photo inspection systems to control quality parameters such as height, diameter, bottom thickness, vial mouth, and thread.
  4. Compatible with a variety of HPLC, LC-MS, and GC instruments.
  5. Large inventory available to meet diverse customer demands.
  6. Vials, caps, and septa can be purchased separately.
  7. Excellent batch-to-batch reproducibility.

How to Select the Right Vials and Septa

Septa Selection Guide

PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene)

  • Recommended for single-use injection.
  • Ideal for mass spectrometry applications.
  • Outstanding solvent resistance and chemical compatibility.
  • Does not reseal after puncture.
  • Not recommended for long-term sample storage.

PTFE/Silicone

  • Recommended for multiple injections and sample storage.
  • Excellent resealing capability.
  • Combines the chemical resistance of PTFE before puncture with the compatibility of silicone after puncture.
  • Operates effectively within a temperature range of -40°C to 200°C.

Pre-slit PTFE/Silicone

  • Provides proper venting to prevent vacuum formation, ensuring exceptional sampling reproducibility.
  • Eliminates needle blockage during sampling.
  • Excellent resealing capability.
  • Recommended for multiple injections.
  • Combines PTFE’s resistance before puncture with silicone’s compatibility after puncture.
  • Operates effectively within a temperature range of -40°C to 200°C.

Cap Selection Guide

Caps are available in three types: crimp, snap, and screw caps, each with unique advantages and considerations:

Crimp Caps

  • Provide a tight seal by compressing the septa between the vial rim and the crimped aluminum cap.
  • Prevent sample evaporation effectively.
  • Septa remain securely in place during needle puncture.
  • Require a crimping tool for sealing.

Snap Caps

  • A variation of the crimp cap, made of plastic that fits over the vial rim.
  • Seals by pressing the septa between the vial and the extended plastic cap.
  • Does not require tools for sealing but offers less sealing efficiency compared to other types.

Screw Caps

  • Universal cap type that forms a seal by applying mechanical force when tightened.
  • Ensures excellent sealing performance.
  • Keeps septa fixed during needle puncture.
  • Easy to seal and requires no tools.
